Force Firefox to Display Webpages with a Specific Font Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:42 AM PST Firefox is an excellent alternative to Internet Explorer as an all-purpose web browser packed with lots of options. Sometimes a website creator makes the font on a webpage too small to read. Some use strange fonts that create the same effect for viewers. Learn how to force Firefox to display webpages with a specific font of your choosing. Why View Webpages with a Specific Font?Webpages sometimes display differently depending on the hardware you use to view it. Most importantly are the video card and monitor you have connected to your computer. If you have trouble reading small fonts on a webpage, you can force Firefox to display the website using a font you select. Some people find it easier to view a webpage using a serif font while others prefer a sans-serif font. Others need the size of the font to be bigger and yet others prefer to let the designers of a site determine what font to use. Whatever your preference, it is nice to know that you have the option of displaying a webpage’s font the way you want. Forcing a Specific Font in FirefoxOpen up Firefox and click on Tools>Options. This will open up the Options window in Firefox. Click on the Content tab and locate a section of the window labeled Fonts & Colors. Then, click on the Advanced button next to the Default Font Size option. You should now be looking at the advanced font options for Firefox. Near the bottom of the window, locate an option titled Allow Pages to Choose Their Own Fonts, Instead of My Selections Above. Uncheck this option. That alone will force Firefox to display the default fonts rather than allowing webpages to tell Firefox which fonts to display. Now you need to choose your default fonts. Notice that in the same window, there are four options. These are the options you use to choose your default fonts. Proportional – This font will display when a webpage uses a proportional font. A Proportional font is one whose letters take up different amounts of space depending on their size. Times New Roman is an example of a Proportional font. Serif – A Serif font is one whose letters have small additions to the ends making it easier to read. This type of font is especially useful on a webpage because it makes reading onscreen text easier. Times New Roman is an example of a Serif font. Sans-Serif – From French, sans means “without.” Therefore, a Sans-Serif font is one that does not contain the small additions to the ends of the letters. This type of font is used typically for headings and other text that needs to stand out. Sometimes, however, it is used for the body of text. Arial is an example of a Sans-Serif font. Monospace – As its name implies, a Monospace font is one whose letters take up the same amount of space per letter. Unlike Proportional fonts, Monospace fonts are great when you want text to line up into columns. However, this type of font is not a good choice for the body of text. Courier New is an example of a Monospace font. Note that you can also change the default font size and you can also specify the Minimum Font Size. Once you have made your choices, click the OK button and then the OK button on the Options window. By changing some options in the web browser, you can force Firefox to display webpages with a specific font. You can even change the size of the default font and specify a minimum font size. Keep in mind that by changing the font, some webpages may not display correctly. If this happens, check the Allow Pages to Choose Their Own Fonts, Instead of My Selections Above option and the pages will display as the creator intended.

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 03:35 AM PST Pretty much every summer Apple release a new version of the iPhone and there are always a lot of people, including myself, that decide to upgrade to the newer version for all the cool features! In that situation, there are usually two things I want to complete. First, I want to transfer all my data and settings from my current iPhone to the new iPhone. Secondly, I want to clean out my old iPhone and set it up so that I can give it to someone else in the family so that they can use it on their own AT&T plan. Both of these tasks are pretty straight-forward and I’ll walk through the steps to properly switch iPhones. Transfer Data from Current iPhone to New iPhoneIt’s definitely worth doing this step for your new iPhone because you can easily transfer all your data and settings including SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, apps, etc. Overall, it makes switching iPhones a very seamless process. Step 1: First download the latest version of iTunes and install it on your computer. Next, connect your current iPhone to your computer and make sure it’s running the latest version of iOS. Upgrade the phone to the latest version. Step 2: Go ahead and sync your current iPhone with iTunes and verify that the backup was created. You can do this by going to iTunes – Preferences on a Mac or Edit – Preferences on a Windows machine. Then click on Devices and you will see the most recent backup in the list box. Confirm that it is the sync you just performed. Step 3: Once you have verified the backup of the current iPhone, it’s time to connect your new iPhone to the same computer that you synced your current iPhone with iTunes. Step 4: iTunes will now ask you whether you want to restore from a backup or if you want to setup the new iPhone as a new phone. At the prompt, select the backup you just created of your current iPhone. Step 5: Now iTunes will go ahead and restore the backup of your current iPhone to your new iPhone. This could take a while, so be patient! Once it has finished the restore, the new iPhone will restart. Step 6: The new iPhone should now appear as a device in iTunes. When it does, go ahead and select it and then click on the various tabs (Photos, Music, Videos, etc) and confirm or change anything that you want to sync. Then go ahead and click on Apply to sync your new iPhone with iTunes. And that’s it! You should now be able to use your new iPhone and have all your data and settings from your old iPhone! A few things to note. Firstly, you will have to re-enter your email and voicemail passwords. Those are never transferred for whatever reason. Go ahead and make sure all your photos, contacts, apps, notes, and all other personal settings have been transferred properly. If not, post a comment here and we’ll try to help! In the next post, I will talk about how to clean out your old iPhone so that someone else can use it or you can sell it. Enjoy!
